A portable bar is a freestanding serving counter you can move, set up anywhere, and store away when the event is over — no construction, no permanent footprint. If you are pricing one for a wedding, a backyard party, a corporate event, or a season of events, this guide walks through the decisions that actually matter: how it comes apart, how big it is, what it is made from, what finish to choose, what it costs, and how ordering and delivery work — using the collapsible portable bars we build at The Wobbly Carpenter as the worked example.
Who buys a portable bar?
Most of our buyers fall into three groups. Couples and party hosts buy a portable bar for a wedding or milestone event, then keep it for future parties — it stores flat between events. Event professionals — bartending services, planners, venues — use portable bars as rental or service inventory because they transport flat and set up in minutes. Homeowners buy one as a home bar that does not commit a room: set it up for the party, break it down and store it after. If any of those sound like you, the rest of this guide is written for you.
Start with how it comes apart
Portability means different things on different listings, so this is the first thing to pin down. Our bars fully collapse flat using lift-away hinges. That is different from a bar that simply folds thinner while staying in one piece: a fully collapsible bar separates into flat pieces for transport and storage, then goes back together with no tools needed for setup. The 5-foot bar breaks into five flat pieces, and the flat pieces fit in most SUVs and truck beds. When you are comparing portable bars, ask whether the bar comes completely apart or only folds — the answer decides how easy it is to move and where you can store it between events.
Check the size against your space
The 5-foot portable bar is 41 inches tall, 5 feet wide, and 22 inches deep, with an interior shelf behind the counter for bottles, glassware, and supplies. That footprint is the space you need wherever the bar will stand, so measure your serving spot — indoors or out — before you order. A 6-foot bar is also available if you want a wider counter. Both sizes are built the same way: they fully collapse flat, set up with no tools, and are made from MDF panels over an internal frame. Every bar is made to order, so whichever size you choose is built for your order rather than pulled from stock. Still deciding? Our 5-foot vs. 6-foot comparison walks through which size fits which event.
Choose a finish
The 5-foot bar is $800 painted in white or black, or $700 raw (unfinished). The 6-foot bar is $950 painted, or $850 raw. Painted gives you a finished bar in white or black; raw gives you the same bar unfinished, ready for your own finish. For a painted bar, the care guidance is simple: with frequent use, touch up the paint as needed to keep it looking sharp. There is no wrong answer here — choose painted if you want the bar ready to use as it arrives, or raw if you already have a finish in mind.
How much does a portable bar cost?
A handmade collapsible portable bar typically runs $700 to $950 depending on size and finish — that is the range for a bar that fully breaks down flat and is built to order. Cheaper options exist, but they are usually folding tables with a skirt, or bars that only fold thinner rather than coming apart; neither transports or stores like a true collapsible bar. When you compare prices, compare what is actually included: full breakdown for transport, solid MDF construction, finished or raw, and whether delivery or pickup is available in your area.
Know how you will get it
Because every bar is made to order by a local builder, pickup and delivery are local too. Pickup is free. Delivery is available within 40 miles of the builder's shop, and checkout confirms that your delivery address is in range before your order is placed. Built by a local craftsman in The Wobbly Carpenter network. Every builder signs our craftsman agreement, and insurance and background check are verified before their first build. Does a portable bar really fold flat?
Ours does more than fold — it fully collapses. The 5-foot bar separates into five flat pieces using lift-away hinges, with no tools needed for setup or breakdown. The pieces fit in most SUVs and truck beds, and store flat between events.
What size portable bar do I need?
For most weddings and parties up to about 100 guests, the 5-foot bar (41" tall × 5' wide × 22" deep) is the sweet spot — room for a bartender, bottles, and glassware on the interior shelf. For larger events or two bartenders working side by side, step up to the 6-foot bar. Our size comparison has the full breakdown.
How long does it take to get a portable bar?
Every bar is made to order, so order ahead of your event date. Once you know your size, run your guest count through our Event Bar Planner to size the drinks, ice, and bartenders for your party at the same time.
Can I pick up my bar instead of having it delivered?
Yes — pickup is free. Delivery is available within 40 miles of the builder's shop, and checkout confirms your address is in range before you order.
What is the bar made of?
MDF panels over an internal frame, with lift-away hinges — no tools required for setup. Choose white or black painted, or raw unfinished MDF ready for your own finish.
